Environmental Management System

The impact that a company can have on the environment is a growing issue throughout the world and many customers now make purchasing decisions which include environmental considerations.

In the last few years more requirements have emerged for companies to implement environmental management systems and often customers are including the requirement in tender specifications.

An Environmental Management System (EMS) provides you with a framework for managing your environmental responsibilities appropriately and in a way that fits in to your work practices.
Implemented well, an environmental management system (EMS) can identify areas of wastage in energy, disposal costs and raw material usage which can lead to significant cost savings.

ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management System Standard

The Environmental Management Standard 14001:2004, as with many other ISO Standards has its basis in the Plan-Do-Check-Act model which includes:

  • Identification of environmental Aspects and an assessment of their significance.
  • Clarification of legal and other requirements.
  • Establishment and communication of objectives and targets related to the environmental management system.
  • Establishment and communication of specific roles and responsibilities including those to be undertaken by top management.
  • Providing training and awareness to appropriate personnel.
  • Ensuring controls are in place for any significant environmental operations.
  • Monitoring the progress of the EMS by internal auditing.
