A Quality Management System (QMS) is a set of policies, processes and procedures required to enable effective planning and delivery production/development/service) of the business.
A QMS integrates the various internal processes within the organization and aims to provide a process approach for project delivery. It also enables the organization to identify, measure, control and improve the various core business processes that will ultimately lead to improved business performance.
There are five key steps taken in implementing a quality management system (QMS):
- Analyse the business by breaking it down into key areas.
- Plan the approach by discussing which resources you need and discussing the effectiveness of existing processes with staff.
- Assess the need for new processes, developing and communicating them to all employees and providing training if necessary.
- Check that the processes are working by appointing someone to be responsible for the system and ensuring procedure/processes are followed. Set targets within each process to contribute to the success of overall business goals.
- Revise processes where necessary and continue to review them regularly through internal audit.
